Arthur Bach (Dudley Moore) is a spoiled, alcoholic New York City playboy and heir to his father’s $750 million fortune, but only if he marries the upper class Susan Johnson. Arthur does not love Susan, but reluctantly agrees to the arranged marriage. That all changes when Arthur has a chance meeting with a working-class Queens waitress, Linda Marolla (Liza Minnelli) and is attracted to her. He takes her on a date and the two instantly fall for each other.
The one person who understands Arthur’s feelings is his valet, Hobson (John Gielgud), who is more like a father to him than Arthur's real father. After a series of comedic mishaps and heartbreaking loss, Arthur realizes he must decide what is most important to him, his new love, or the millions in the bank.
