A woman wandering the streets of Paris is approached by General Bounine (Brynner), a Russian exile who once served as an officer in the Russian Imperial Army and now a partner in the scheme to produce the grand duchess. The woman, Anna Korkov, bears a striking resemblance to the duchess. Weak and suffering from bouts of amnesia, Anna succumbs to Bounine's promises to help her find her identity and agrees to become his Anastasia.

In a series of encounters with former family and members of the imperial court, Anna is so convincing in her performance even the biggest skeptics believe her. On the night the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna , Anastasia’s grandmother, is to present Anna as her heir, the two have a private meeting. When the Dowager Empress returns to the ball, she has a surprise for the guests.
