Randle McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) is serving out a sentence on a prison farm. He plans to avoid hard labor by feigning mental illness, hoping to finish his prison time in a comfortable hospital setting. He arrives at the mental ward to find it run by cruel and domineering Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher). McMurphy quickly understands that as long as the men are afraid of Ratched they will never get well enough to leave the mental ward.

The battle with Nurse Ratched wears on McMurphy. He realizes Ratched and the doctors can keep him on the mental ward indefinitely. With no release in sight, McMurphy plans an escape. But not without one last hurrah, unforeseen complications, and a lasting act of defiance by the gentle giant, “Chief” Bromden.

Hollywood at Home, Saturday at 9 p.m. on PBS-HD 6.
