The state of Arizona is accelerating its push to get people vaccinated against COVID-19. Governor Doug Ducey and Dr. Cara Christ, director of the Arizona Department of Health Services, are featured in public service announcements hitting the airwaves now.
The state is trying to boost demand for the vaccination, which appears to be tapering off. State health officials said Tuesday they have 34,000 appointments still available from the batch released last Friday, and another 80,000 appointments will become available this Friday.
The video was recorded before Monday's announcement that the state was making everyone over 16 years of age eligible for the vaccination.
"As more vaccines become available and new categories open up please schedule your appointment when it is your turn," Dr. Cara Christ says in one of the English-language messages.
As of Wednesday morning there are no more categories and no one needs to wait their turn. All adults are eligible to register on the state website.
The state's goal is to reach herd immunity with 70% of the state's 7 million people fully immunized by this fall, but it could fall short if more people don't sign up for their shot. So far, roughly 1.2 million Arizonans have been fully vaccinated.
The state also produced a Spanish language version with David Adame, president and CEO of Chicanos Por La Causa.
