Teachers' Voices with Corrine Blum and Betsy Wilkening

Two educators discuss how the book "Champions for Change" has been encouraging their students to initiate positive changes in their schools and communities.

In cooperation with Tucson Values Teachers, Arizona Spotlight presents a special series called Teachers' Voices. These conversations between educators, administrators, and students gives them a chance to share personal stories about the struggles and triumphs of their daily school experience.

In 2009, author, ecologist and Earth explorer Jane Poynter wrote a book called Champions for Change, which portrayed the challenges that are currently facing our environment along with stories of transformation and success from a host of world-famous athletes.

The book aimed to shows how our lives - and theirs - are intimately intertwined with the natural world, one that is feeling the impact of global climate change. It was Jane's vision for the book that it also be used in schools to help educate and inspire students.

In this segment, Corrine Blum, an 8th grade reading teacher at La Cima Middle School, and Betsy Wilkening, a 7th grade science and engineering & robotics teacher at Wilson K - 8 School in the Amphi School District talk about the effect that they've seen the Champions for Change program have on the kids they teach...
