Tucson’s 17th annual Grease Collection and Recycling event will happen as the holidays wrap up in January. City officials are asking Tucsonans to start collecting their cooking grease in an airtight container this week as they prepare Thanksgiving dinner.
" It's just sort of a triple win for us where it helps the residents, it's good for clean water, and then eventually, it's good for clean air as well," said Jason Grodman with the Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department.
The event kept over 12 thousand gallons of grease from going down the drain and into Tucson’s sewer system last year.
The county converts the grease collected into biodiesel, which burns cleaner than regular diesel, and sells it locally.
Residents can drop off the cooking grease they collect on January 8th at seven different sites around the city.
