The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona is holding collections across the area this weekend.
Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona Associate Manager Lou Medran shares a problem with many Southern Arizonans. He has a few too many oranges and grapefruits from the trees in his yard.
"So I end up having to take mine to the food bank every year. So yeah, there's a lot of citrus out there in the Tucson area, in outlying areas," Medran said. "So it's really beneficial to be able to provide that to our clients."
Medran said the food bank team used to glean the fruits themselves from donors’ yards, but moved to using drop off sites a few years ago because it was too labor intensive. Since then, the program has blossomed.
"Just make sure that the fruit’s not damaged or you know, it doesn't have any kind of holes in it. Try to get the stem off it," Medran said. "I just like that it comes to us whole. We don't want too many bugs as we load them into the truck.
Drop off sites can be found across Tucson and around the region in Catalina, Vail and other towns. You can find more information at the food bank’s website.
