In a video released Tuesday Sen. Kyrsten Sinema said she has worked on bipartisan solutions, but that is not what Americans want.
“Despite modernizing our infrastructure, ensuring clean water, delivering good jobs and safer communities, Americans still choose to retreat farther to their partisan corners,” she said in the video. “These solutions are considered failures either because they are too much, or not nearly enough. It’s all or nothing.”
Sinema highlighted her work on bipartisan legislation on infrastructure, marriage equality, gun safety, and more.
“I believe in my approach,” she said. “But, it's not what America wants right now. I love Arizona and I am so proud of what we’ve delivered. Because I choose civility, understanding, listening, working together to get stuff done, I will leave the Senate at the end of this year.”
Sinema recently railed against her Republican colleagues in the Senate for rejecting a bipartisan border security package that, amongst other things, outlined more than a billion dollars for the federal program that funds NGOs like Tucson’s Casa Alitas, which is running out of money for migrant services at the end of the month.
Sinema won her seat in 2018 as a Democrat and became an independent in 2022. She is the first woman elected to represent Arizona in the Senate. She has been an elected official for the past 20 years, first in the Arizona legislature before the U.S. House and Senate.
Sinema’s Senate seat is up for election this year. Kari Lake, who lost a bid for Arizona governor in 2022, and Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb are both running for the seat on the Republican side. Congressman Ruben Gallego is the front-running Democrat in the race.
