Listen:
Gov. Doug Ducey Tuesday approved Arizona's budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1.
The $9.6 billion budget includes $1 million in new funding. That is a change from recent budgets, which were marked by cuts.
The budget brings the state into a structural balance.
“This budget is proof the government can live within its means and be responsible with the people’s money,” Ducey said.
Arizona’s three universities receive $19 million in one-time funding to make up for losses in recent years.
Public schools receive more funding in the budget. The law requires most of that increase to offset inflation and growth.
A group of House Republicans held the budget to get more funding for public schools.
After a week of negotiations, they were able to convince legislative leaders and the governor to add another $30 million dollars for the next fiscal year.
