University of Arizona students and sports fans will notice a new building on the east side of the Tucson campus this fall semester.
Workers are building the two-story C.A.T.S. Academic Center on Enke Drive across from the south entrance to McKale Memorial Center. It includes more than 17,000 square feet of academic workspace.
Steve Kozachik, the associate athletic director for facilities, says the new building will give student-athletes a place where they can study, meet with counselors and get all the support they need to succeed academically.
“We’re not just recruiting people to come in and kick balls and shoot baskets. We’re bringing these people in to develop life skills,” Kozachik said.
Construction of the $5.5 million center was funded through alumni commitments and other private donations. Developers plan to finish the project in October. Game-day traffic near Arizona Stadium and the Cherry Avenue Garage will not be affected.
