All of Pima Animal Care Center’s dogs and cats - including puppies and kittens - are up for adoption for $10 through Sept. 11.
The county-run animal shelter is trying to alleviate chronic crowding, said Director of Community Engagement Justin Gallick.
"The facility was built years ago to house approximately 400 pets," said Gallick. "And we have about 650 in the shelter right now."
One reason for the crowding is that animal welfare has changed since the shelter was built, he said.
"In the past [animal welfare] was about catching animals, taking them in, giving them a few days to get adopted. Now we’ve progressed so much that we’re going above and beyond to save the savable."
He said that means there are now more animals in the shelter at any given time.
All adopted pets will come spayed or neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and with a free visit to the vet.
Adoptions are available at the Pima Animal Care Center shelter and four participating PetSmart stores.
