A Race to Watch in Arizona's 2nd Congressional District

Plus, presidential contest casts shadow over McCain-Kirkpatrick Senate race.

The race for U.S. representative in Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District is considered a race to watch.

Republican Martha McSally, a retired Air Force Colonel, won the seat by a narrow margin two years ago in the district, which covers much of Southern Arizona.

She faces a challenge from Democrat Matt Heinz, a physician and former state legislator.

Traditionally voting red, in recent years the 2nd Congressional District has been nearly evenly split between Republicans and Democrats. Approximately one-third of voters are registered as independents.

On Arizona Week, we hear from both candidates on a range of issues.

Also on the program:

  • Longtime Republican Senator John McCain is being challenged by U.S. Representative Ann Kirkpatrick, and the presidential race is casting a big shadow over the race. The names of the two presidential candidates were front and center for the only debate between McCain and Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick, a former county prosecutor and state legislator, says it’s time for someone else to represent Arizona. McCain has served in the Senate for nearly 30 years, and he’s seeking a sixth term.
