El Presidio Park and old Pima County Courthouse. A rally is planned in Tucson Saturday to protest President Donald Trump’s order banning refugees.
A grassroots coalition calling itself “We The People” will rally to support refugee resettlement. Organizer Debe Campbell said refugees go through a long and thorough screening process to be approved to come to the U.S.
“I’m sorry, they’ve been vetted to death. It takes sometimes up to three years for someone to go through the American vetting process before they can become a candidate for immigration to the United States,” Campbell said.
Campbell said the rally aims to protest the president's order and proposals by state lawmakers to suspend Arizona’s refugee resettlement program.
“This is about humanity. It’s about rights, human rights. This is our community and these are our neighbors,” Campbell said.
The rally will be in El Presidio Plaza Park from 2 to 3 p.m.
Tucson City Councilman Steve Kozachik and Tucson Diocese Bishop Gerald Kicanas are among those scheduled to speak.
