Former Pima Community College board member Sylvia Lee will fill out the remaining year of Sharon Bronson's term on the Pima County Board of Supervisors. Bronson resigned last month for health reasons.
Lee promised not to run in the next election, so her appointment Tuesday means there will be no incumbent on the ballot in District three for the first time in decades. Supervisor Rex Scott noiminated Lee after voting against other candidates who said they planned to run for a full term next year.
"I do not believe, after not having an open seat for over 30 years, that the Board of Supervisors should confer the advantage of incumbency upon anybody who said that they would be a candidate or could be a candidate," Scott said.
The board rejected three other applicants before appointing Lee. April Ignacio, Jennifer Allen and Kristen Randall all said they would run for the seat in 2024. None received a majority vote.
Lee is a Tucson native, who has spent more than 40 years in various education roles in Arizona. She retired from the PCC board in 2018.
