A federal judge Friday upheld Arizona's new "ballot harvesting law by refusing to block its enforcement at the request of Democrats.
The law passed by the Legislature this year made it a felony to return someone else’s early ballot to election officials. The law makes exceptions for government officials, family members and caregivers.
Democrats asked for the injunction because they claimed the law suppresses voter turnout.
The judge disagreed and said there is no proof it would have negative effects on voting.
Republican state lawmakers argued in the Legislature that the la w is needed to prevent voter fraud. No cases of that type of voter fraud have been reported in Arizona.
Elections officials in Pima and Maricopa counties have said they will not enforce the law during this election cycle.
