The University of Arizona is set to start a new women’s ice hockey team as soon as next year.
UA Campus Recreation has officially started recruiting for its 2024 inaugural season of women’s ice hockey. Caitilin Hogan, a four-time olympic weightlifting medalist and career hockey player, will lead the team as the program’s first head coach.
“Being named the new head coach for the first-ever University of Arizona Women’s Hockey team is a tremendous honor,” Hogan said in a press release. “There is definitely a sense of pride and responsibility in being involved in building the foundation of this new team…I can’t wait to hit the ice.”
The program hopes to accelerate the growth of women’s hockey in Arizona, while providing opportunities for women to experience the sport.
“One of Caitlin’s main goals is not only development of student-athletes here on campus, but to cultivate and grow hockey for women and girls for the entire Tucson community,” Troy Vaughn, Senior Director of Campus Recreation, said in a press release. “I could not think of anyone better to do just that than Coach Hogan.”
The Division One team will compete in the American Collegiate Hockey Association and join in the Western Women’s Collegiate Hockey League Conference. For now, the team will call the Tucson Convention Center home, playing on the same ice as the men’s professional minor league team the Tucson Roadrunners. The team will later take up permanent residence in the new Mosaic Quarter Iceplex when it opens in late 2025.
