Director Alexander Payne's film Nebraska is about the life, hopes and dementia of a man who is taken by his son on what could be his last road trip. The film was recognized by audiences and critics as one of the best movies of 2013.
The film stars, Bruce Dern and Stacy Keach, who between them have performed in hundreds of films and TV shows. Both actors visit Tucson on October 18th & 19th to participate in The 2014 Loft Film Fest. Mark McLemore talks with each about their long careers, and why they think Nebraska deserves its acclaim.
Bruce Dern's starring role as the stubborn, inscrutable Woody Grant in Nebraska surprised many. It was a quiet, introverted performance -- a full 180 degrees from Dern's famous portrayals of nervous and aggressive characters.
Nebraska earned Dern a best actor nomination at the Academy Awards, and as he humbly tells Mark McLemore in this interview, helped finally convinced him that other people thought he had "game" as an actor. Bruce Dern is eager to show the film to a Tucson audience as part of The Loft Film Festival...

If Nebraska can be said to have an antagonist, it's the character of Ed Pygram, played by Stacy Keach. Friendly on the surface and full of implied menace, it's the kind of hardboiled character that Keach has always had a flair for.
Keach's diverse career has included westerns, musicals, Shakespeare, and sitcoms, plus being a narrator for Nova on PBS and The Twilight Zone on radio.
